Schooling was provided by 'Grandpa' Mack in Swardeston, Norfolk. Grew up with Edith Cavell. Worked in Brandon (Suffolk)
before he was married. Lived in Rochford when first married. Uncle Ernie said he played cricket and was a round arm bowler.
Kelleys Directory 1906-1913 shows Ernest Mack Hardingham, farrier, 31-33 Milton St. (Commercial & private.)
1881 Census. 10 children at home. Susanna 16, Samuel M 14, George 13, William E 12, Joanna 10, Harriett 8, Francis 6, Ernest M.
aged 4, Charles 4, Gertrude A. 7 months. Others? Israel Daniel, Percy , Alfred, Frank, Bert, Edie.
Info to Meg Hardingham June 2000 from Ernie -My father was born a Dye but when he married an Uncle Percy
objected to the name and declared he was a Hardingham, which was confirmed & this led to a lot of present gene
confusion as the name changed & he left the Suffolk area & tried to hide. He was discovered by a chance meeting
at a Barbers (Garons Southend High Street) by someone who knew him as Ernie Dye & the cat was out of the bag.
My Father had hospital treatment over it !!!!
Probate - London 22/3/1935 to Sarah Ann (widow) and Wm. M.H. Butchers Asst. Effects £701.17.9d.
Verney Cooper & Co. Solicitors, Southend -costs of application for Probate etc amounted to £13 but charged 8gns.
Will - dated 8th May 1928. Exors/T/ees S.A. Hardingham and Wm Mack Hardingham. Estate left to wife and children
on attaining the age of 25. Wm is to have £50 extra as a slight compensation for his loss of one eye sustained whilst
working for 'me'. Sarah could buy a freehold property from proceeds of the business and house.
Probate applied for 22nd March 1935. - from Verney Cooper. Wm. Living at 19 High st. Southend at the time.
Newspaper clippings - aged 58, leaving widow, 6 sons, 3 daughters. Came from Norfolk to Southend 35 years ago.
Been a farrier at milton St. for 30 years. Member of Coleman St. Gospel Hall. Funeral took place on Monday 21/1/35
at Coleman St. then commital at the Borough Cemetery. Address and commital by Mr. E.F.Iles and scripture read by
Mr. W. Iles. Interment carried out by JW Tate & Son.
Order of Service - states time of death at 7.30 am on 16th January. 3 hymns - Precious thought, Thy will, O Lord,
and There's a land that is fairer than day.
33 Milton Street was demolished under com;ulsion order and would now be near the present junction of Chichester Road and Queensway, Southend
