I’ve
noticed recently that secular books have been separated
from Christian books – you have to go and find
a ‘Christian Book Shop’ – is it because
Christianity might get contaminated? or is it because
Waterstones are just plain scared of God? – the
good news is that Amazon don’t seem to be so
picky!!
Anyway – I
went to Norwich the other day and visited Waterstones.
I couldn’t help noticing one of the aisles had
an unusually high density of men gawking at the shelves
with their heads cocked to one side so they could read
the spines. What could possibly be so attractive to ‘men
only’?
I
could see the ‘spirituality’ section beyond
them and in my richest voice started negotiating my
way through with those highly original greetings “Excuse
me” – “can I just squeeze through”.
The
Spirituality section was small and less than inspiring,
but here’s the thing – next to the section
on spirituality was a larger section titled ‘Paranormal
relationships’ – I didn’t stop to
browse for too long for fear of meeting someone with
green skin of the ‘desperately seeking’ variety.
It
left me wondering whether the public are more interested
in paranormal relationships than in spirituality and
I was equally worried that Joe Public is more and more
judging God by the size of his section in Waterstones
or indeed by looking at the outside of church buildings.
So
. . . what is it that men find so interesting? |
